You will be subject to supplementary admission criteria. Most UCs will not accept you as a transfer student if you have not chosen and prepared for a major. The CA state budget crisis has resulted in a highly competitive transfer admissions process whereby completion of lower-division requirements for a specific major may be one type of screening criteria.
General Education consists of a variety of courses from a broad range of disciplines designed to give students exposure to many different areas of study. These GE courses are part of your required 60 transferable semester units. There are two patterns from which a student may choose from:.
Note: completion of GE is not required to transfer and should be secondary to completion of major preparation coursework. Your unique circumstance previous college work, major focus will determine which plan is best for you. Some majors prefer that you do not concentrate heavily on general education. Some colleges and schools at the UC have special application requirements or screening procedures for students applying to certain majors and programs of study.
For example, a student who is applying as a fine arts major may be required to submit a portfolio or audition as part of the application process.
Another type of program may require the student to complete a special application form. In general, students who transfer to the UC at the junior level are expected to have completed most, if not all, of the lower-division coursework required in their major. UC Electives are UC transferable courses that can be selected to reach the goal of 60 transferable semester units.
Most transfer students take electives. However, students with high unit majors may not need to take electives, because preparation work for their major along with minimum eligibility requirements reaches or exceeds the required 60 semester units. The choice is entirely up to the student as long as the course is transferable and stays within guidelines and limitations listed on the UC TCA. A student must complete at least 60 transferable semester units including admission requirements, preparation in the major, selection criteria, general education and electives in order to transfer successfully to the UC as a Junior.
Caution: The final responsibility for a successful transfer program rests with the student. This information changes frequently and can impact your admission to the university. It is highly advised that you meet periodically with counselors at City College AND advisors at the university to confirm your choice of classes and educational plan.

California community college students are given first priority over other transfer applicants when applying to a UC, and many campuses offer guaranteed admission for well-prepared transfer students.
Students who participate in TAG receive early review of academic records, early admission notification, and specific guidance about major preparation and general education coursework. The filing period for TAG applications is September 1 — 30 every year. If you choose to apply for TAG, you must additionally complete the regular UC application, the filing period for which is November 1 — 30 every year.
This program is ideal for students starting out at a Community College who already know what major they wish to pursue, but do not know which UC campuses to apply to. By utilizing Pathways, students can prepare for their major by taking a single set of courses that applies to all nine UC campuses. Please note that this is not a program that you can sign up for, it is just a generalized list of major preparation classes that you can take while at a CCC that will apply to any UC.
