I don't think you'd see a high school coach hired to coach in the NBA or the NFL, at least not without coaching a few years in college first. Steve Bush was hired away from a high school to join the Dolphins Staff. And in , 20 percent of the coaches in the NFL started their careers at the high school level. There aren't nearly as many full-time professional international and college jobs in wrestling as their are in football and basketball and as a result, there are MANY wrestling coaches in the high school or youth club ranks that could be leading college and international athletes.
And I know, wrestling is different, but the general concept I think remains consistent. The greatest coaches I worked with were not World or Olympic champs, some not even national champs. As pointed out he was hardly "just another HS coach". He also had those kids wrestle the internal styles. He would also coach the grads at the Senior level tournaments. And on and on. Interesting story, after Gallick graduated his mom would often corner him. She was really good.
The athletes are making good money from competing so when they are done competing they can retire or have the capital to persue opportunities outside of coaching their sport so they have less top level competitor's trying to coach. I'm cool with him being there. While his connections certainly helped push him to the front of the pack of any applicants, it's WHAT he knows that landed him the gig. What makes Jeff Buxton better then any of the great coaches around Ohio or Cincinnati for that matter? Need I go on? Who couldn't coach those types of kids?
CincyCoach said:. Yeah, you're probably right. Any old coach with access to rich kids could do what Buxton did. Last edited: Mar 13, And why do you think those kids are relocating to Blair?
Has it always been that way? How did that begin? What was the program like prior to Buxton taking it over? Is it safe to assume they became the best program in the country by accident and Buxton had nothing to do with that? That's exactly what Moller does with the football program. Do you think they won all those state titles with the local talent? With all the superstars why didn't Blair win the national prep title? Maybe because the superstar coach wasn't there.
No doubt Buxton could put Moller on the map. Slide-by said:. Root Rousch Zerkle Cameron Lindsey. DadsEyeView New member. The prep school rosters on the east coast are full of financially-advantaged out-of-state students. Blair is no different except for the fact that Blair now attracts a high percentage of very good wrestlers.
Normally, it's result of a culture started by a head coach. The momentum Buxton created has apparently been maintained. Hopefully, for Moeller, the momentum created by Coach Gaier will be continued by his successor. If you want to keep coaching, why leave Blair?
Does Moeller have a schedule for next year yet? I heard there might not be the Moeller Super Duals do to the success of the football team the last several years. I know it's early but I would hope to replace them with duals with LaSalle and St.
Xavier again. Do any of these guys teach, or does Moeller have a track record for hiring head coaches who don't teach? Can't tell if this is a legit question or condescending? Congrats to Coach Gaier for a hall of fame career, and for going out on his own terms. He was always respectful and appreciative, and his room was always open to our kids, whether it was pre-season or post-season. I will always be grateful for his lending hand and advice whenever I called, and his constant words of encouragement to keep doing what I was doing.
Brennan Ryan. Last edited: Mar 14, It was a legit question. Some schools are hesitant to hire head coaches who are not teachers in the district. Other schools do that quite often. I just wasn't sure which way Moeller leaned on this issue. Most schools will hire assistants who are not teachers, but many schools require or prefer the head coach to be a teacher.
News Five New member. Ok - looks like it's safe to say nobody knows or at least is saying who the head coach will be. Those are some pretty big shoes Moeller is going to have to fill. Moeller needs a Powerhouse Coach to jump in and keep the program climbing. Grooming an inexperienced head coach takes time - can Moeller keep the top talent in the room without a top notch head coach?? Choose wisely. Will we see Moeller transfers or possibly freshman changing their choice of high schools at the last minute??
Elite athletes and their parents will be watching this one closely. Moeller had quite the staff change in their wrestling and football programs recently let's hope they stick with hiring the best to remain the best.
Dionysus Active member. Dumbest Idea: To the coach who showed up at the Moorestown Duals and suggested the team seeding be based on the region ranking power points. Most Refreshing Quote: To the coach who was asked about the above rule when he illegally used a wrestler up two weights.
Best Blast from the Past: The time Bergen Catholic drove all the way to the Beast of the East, checked into a hotel and then withdrew from the tourney without wrestling a bout when it discovered it would have had too many bouts in one week. Duck of the Year: South Plainfield backing out of its match against Phillipsburg with the lame excuse about having too many matches in one week.
Most Predictable Development: Long Branch, a. Have you noticed when these schools wrestle it always seems to be decided by one or two points?
You could hear the roar in Toms River all the way back in Phillipsburg. There was only one slight problem: Smith retired a year ago.
