And two years ago, a group of queer and trans NYC residents started an organization called Reclaim Pride. In the mids, de Marco said he was alarmed when executive director Franny Price scheduled the parade for the same weekend as the Odunde Festival , one of the largest and longest running Black street festivals in the country.
He asked Price to switch the date of Pride. Pride started as a riot among Black trans women in response to police violence , so many queer and trans people feel police inclusion in modern events is problematic. The following year, in , Philly Pride Presents senior adviser Chuck Volz was discovered sharing racist and misogynistic memes on his personal social media account.
Things came to a head this summer, when Philly Pride Presents posted a Facebook message that included the pro-police Thin Blue Line flag — which has become a symbol of white supremacy — altered with a rainbow stripe.

Pride is too nuanced and diverse for such a homogenous, top-down leadership structure. Pride should be more of a patchwork, something neighborhood-led and community-tailored to accommodate the relevant experiences and tastes of different groups. For others, Pride is a time of reflection and revolution; for them, there should be support for activists and organizers to mobilize.
Those who want law-enforcement involvement at Pride should be allowed to have that, but without making the rest of the community feel obliged to participate. Philadelphia is big and queer enough to support niche collectives that can encompass a more inclusive Pride without being swallowed by the overarching presence of an umbrella organization like Philly Pride Presents.
