HI guys, I've recently become extremely fascinated with Discus. I've always known they existed, but I've never really payed any attention to them; all of a sudden, I've started to really want some. I've been doing my research and nearly all of my current fish aren't recommended tank mates for Discus; I'm thinking of rehousing my current stock.
Irregardless, I'd love to get some. My question is: How many adult discus could comfortably be housed in a 50 gallon tank? The dimensions are 48x14x18 inch. I'd love to get only two, but I've read that Discus feel most secure in a group of about five or six or more, though I doubt I can fit up to six discus comfortably in a 50g.
Can I house just two Discus, or will I encounter some issues? I've kept them solo and in pairs without issue but if you're looking to keep more I'd say you could probably keep in a tank of that size if you had very good filtration. Discus need very very clean water. It can be a lot of work but they really are spectacular fish. That crazy fish man. I've never personally had discus, but again they do need very good filtration.
Discus fish belong to the freshwater South American cichlid family and therefore display a natural cichlid pecking order. I have found that adding more Discus fish to the tank calms their behavior by diluting this pecking order. This stock level will result in your Discus fish growing evenly.
There will be minimal pecking at feeding time and all the Discus fish will get their share of the meal. To ensure your aquarium is in its best condition for the proper functioning and growth of your Discus, ensure regular water changes, clean up your tank as often as possible, and always use standard filters to eliminate any toxin from your tank.
