How does patriot games end

The novel was adapted for the movie by screenwriters W. Peter Iliff, Donald E. Stewart, and Steven Zaillian. There is so little continuity that the two movies can be watched as standalones.

In that book, Ryan has a son and a daughter. Clancy's second book, Patriot Games , goes back in time to show how a previously retired Jack Ryan returned to the CIA and ends with the birth of his son. His son is born at the end of Patriot Games. That is a memorial for the CIA agents that died over the years. It is located at their headquarters in Virginia.

It only shows numbers and letters to protect the identities of the agents and potentially their families. On the surface, it was just a simple way for the barrister to discredit Jack and make him look bad to strengthen Sean Miller's defense. However, the deeper implication is that Jack was doing the work of a covert agent when he stopped Miller and his brother from kidnapping the British Lord and his family. While he is being interrogated by the police, Sean is slapped in the face and called a "Fenian".

Fenian is a generally derogatory term applied towards supporters of Irish nationalism, most often denoting a Catholic or a member of the IRA Irish Unionists consider it akin to referring to an Irish person as a Nazi. The name comes from the Fianna, warrior bands in early medieval Ireland.

The name is Irish for 'we ourselves'. Their members were often, but not exclusively, made up of former IRA operatives but were never directly involved with violence. Those who have both seen the movie and read the book say that the movie follows the novel fairly closely. The biggest difference appears to be in the passage of time. Scenes that seem to span a few days in the movie last for months in the book.

For example, Sally's recovery, Sean Miller's stakeout of Sally and Cathryn before the attack, and a chapter where Ryan spends just about every day at a Marine shooting range. Another notable difference in the books is that the member of the Royal Family who was nearly captured was the Prince of Wales.

It was toned down for the movie, probably because the idea of the prince and his family being that vulnerable might look a bit outrageous. In addition, the female terrorist Annette does not appear in the book. The girl that Jack spots in the satellite picture is a female member of Action Directe who is not involved whatsoever in the attacks to the Prince and the Ryan family. Miller's fate also differs. In the film, he ends by getting impaled on the boat.

The group later goes after Ryan and his family in the United States, partially as an act of revenge, but primarily because they seek to undermine public and specifically American support for their rivals, the Provisional IRA. The assassin sent to kill Ryan is intercepted before he manages to complete his task, but Ryan 's wife, Cathy , and daughter, Sally , are attacked by the terrorists who spray the car with gunfire, causing it to crash.

Cathy escapes with minor injuries but Sally is gravely wounded and lies near death. The attack ultimately fails, and Jack and the Prince, with the help of Naval Academy midshipmen, coast guard and local police, arrest the terrorists on a freighter they had planned to use for their escape.

Jack Ryan is particularly gratified that Miller who he almost executes with a Browning hi Power , who had incidentally killed a Maryland cop after attacking Ryan 's wife and daughter , had been arrested after committing murder in a state with the death penalty: in the attack on the Royal Family, Miller had committed murder, but the U. Presumably, The U. This child will have two very different sets of godparents: Robby and Cecilia Jackson ; and the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Register Don't have an account? Patriot Games. Jones and Kimble , but it never gets old to watch him thinking in front of us, in a way that makes the act of thinking badass.

There's virtually no-one else in the cast operating at his level - Anne Archer is a blank spot as Ryan's wife, more of a notion than a character, and Bean jumps from "ideologue" to "screaming insane Ahab figure" far too quickly, in addition to having one of the shittiest Irish accents this side of Brad Pitt in that other movie with Harrison Ford and the IRA - but there almost doesn't need to be; Patriot Games is still ultimately a spy movie, and the spying is what matters most.

Ford is an exquisitely capable movie spy, enthralling to watch even when the directing around him is simply fine and the James Horner score allegedly pumping more tension and excitement into the movie is really just derivative tosh. I suspect that with literally any other actor, this would be an entertaining and forgettable diversion that wouldn't be worth talking about, but with Ford as its anchor, Patriot Games is lively and meaningful, its Jack Ryan one of the most human action heroes of the early '90s.

Megalon View on Twitter. Alternate Ending Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized they all shared a passion for movies. Our goal is to save you time and money by sharing our thoughts and recommendations on which movies to race to theaters for, which to watch at home and those to actively avoid. What makes Alternate Ending different from other film sites and podcasts?

Tim Brayton, our seasoned film critic, shares a more critical view of film, an appreciation for vintage cinema and perhaps limited-release movies that we might otherwise miss.

Carrie, our casual movie-goer, reminds us all that cinema is in fact supposed to be fun and entertaining and that sometimes, just sometimes, happy endings are good. Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it.

We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well.
